This is a "true treat" I found at a garage sale about 5 years ago with intentions of "antiquing" it and have just barely gotten around to it. It is a "Lane" brand cedar chest and the inside has the NICEST cedar and smells glorious ;) ... doesn't get much better than that smell does it?? Its so true that "one mans trash is another mans treasure!"
I'm not completely sold on the way it ended up but I learned a lot for the next time I redo it... which MAY be in a couple of weeks.
For those of you who know me.. I'm obsessed with GREEN.. I love to wear it, decorate with it.. everything, hence the reason I chose this color, but it turned out a bit more "ghost-bustery" than I anticipated, but in my defense the color that it looks in this picture is a lot uglier than it is in person!!
I have re-finished quite a few pieces of old furniture in the past, but this was the first time that I tried the antiquing method and it was actually a lot of fun taking on this project. I learned a lot... First my dad helped me sand blast the old finish off, then I roughed it up with chains, a hammer, and a sander, and painted it green, and then my mom and I used a dark stain to make it looked aged. I'll do things a lot different when I redo it for the 2nd time, but that's how we learn right??!! maybe turquoise instead... what do you think????

Way to go! I think it looks pretty good! My sister, Carlianne has actually been looking for a cedar chest, so I've been looking on craigslist for just about the same thing you have. Maybe we'll run into one and do some antiquing, too! We'll have to get pointers from you if we do.
My absolute favorite thing is refurbishing! I love before and after posts! Katie you are so talented and I think it looks s o gorgeous!! Keep these ones coming!! I can't wait to see how great it is the second time around when it already looks so fabulous!
I love it! I think it turned out great. Much better than what I can do! Nice work!

Kate! Was I that mean and was it really 6 in the morning. I think of you 3 girls laughing and I can still hear it in my head. I always knew when Nicole was with you...she was safe. (safer) He He! You were like my own daughter. I was thinking about the 4 wheeling in the mud. I think that was my favorite memory. Especially when you had to go clean off in the canal. I will post pictures of that. People need to see that. I also laugh at the grapefruit. Can I post that on my blog? All the dances, games, swimming at Grandma Pasley's Pool, and were you there the night you guys stayed at my house, got your shoes on at 3 in the morning, (the shoes were by our bedroom door) and left and left a note. "Mom, we snuck out...just thought we would do it once before we graduate!) (Was really the only time you snuck out?) What about the time you opened the candy drawer and it was empty and you said: " This better never happen again. Really Kate, you was not only a good friend to Nicole but a bright spot in my life. I LOVE to hear you laugh and you guys did lots of that! I miss ya tons and LOVE ya tons! I really, truly tried to keep my candy drawer and my heart full for you girls at all times!
Good job on your furniture!
(AND CAN I POST THE GRAPEFRUIT PICTURE?)

That looks fantastic, way to go!
So I know I already commented on this post, but I wanted to tell you that I went to dinner with a group of people tonight and your sister was there! I didn't know she was your sister till she and her husband left. But when I first saw her I thought to myself, "She sure does look like a Huls." It wasn't until I started asking questions about everybody there that I found out who she was. Anyway, it was pretty random and I wanted to tell ya! Have a great day!
Wow Kate! I'm WAY impressed. It looks awesome! I think I would LOVE it in turqoise too! If you do it again you'd better post pics. :) You are my best!
So I never cease to be amazed by your talents! I am so impressed! That chest turned out great! WE definitely need to get together again, it was way fun. Maybe after the summer is over we can have a regular game/date night.
Wow, this project is WAY over my head! I consider myself crafty, but there is no way I'd dare take on a project like this. It sounds so complicated. I do have to figure out something for an old piano that is being given to us & is so ugly. I was planning on just sanding it & painting it black & then roughing up the edges. I think I will for sure need to get pointers when I finally get around to it because your way sounds MUCH better! (and like you actually know what you're doing!) I like it, but I do think that turquoise would look way good if you have matchin accents. Funny you like green so much. I didn't know that. The place I just moved into is painted green & I really like it. It goes well with all my brown furniture & bamboo stuff.
What a fun project! I love it!
that's so cool! I have 3 dressers that I inherited from my mom, I have been meaning to refinish them since, well, my laurel project! ha ha! You have inspired me!
I think it looks great! I'm sure you'll have to change it again sometime... good thing your parents let you store all your "treasures" :) Miss you friend-hope to see you soon!
